Lake Whatcom is located near Bellingham, forming part of the city's eastern border, and is about 14 miles long. Over 85,000 Whatcom County residents rely on Lake Whatcom for drinking water. Lake Whatcom is also a popular recreational site, used for boating, swimming, fishing, and other activities.

Bloedel Donovan Park
This is a popular destination for swimming and boating, especially in the summer. Bloedel Donovan Park has the lake's only public boat launch within city limits, and there are concession stands and watercraft rentals in-season. The park also offers a soccer field, outdoor basketball court, sand volleyball court, playground, and a pavillion that is host to numerous community events.

Lakewood
Owned by the Viking Union of WWU, this 4,000-square-foot log facility contains a boat house, meeting lounge, locker rooms, and the manager's apartment. The site has a sand volleyball court, picnic tables and BBQ's, hiking trails, and a Ropes Challenge Course. Watercraft rentals available for WWU and WCC students and faculty.

North Lake Whatcom Park
Hertz Trail is an easy 3.1 miles one way. It follows the old Blue Canyon mine railroad grade along the shores of Lake Whatcom. A beautiful trail snuggled tightly between Stewart Mountain and Lake Whatcom. There are very scenic, tranquil spots along the shoreline.
